At Hahei, we decided to take a hike up the coast a bit to Cathedral Cove. The walking route was six kilometers round trip and up and down a hundred meters a few times. It was a bit of an effort for us old people. Still, the walk through lush semi-tropical vegetation was a treat for those of us living in an arid semi-desert.
After a number of rest stops, we stopped at the highest point to take this selfie. Lots of little islands dot the coast. Gorgeous day for a hike.
The highlight of the Cathedral Cove is this arch washed away by water and wind. Mike, Jan and Bev are standing near for scale.
Bev's picture of Jan and Mike with a view through the "Cathedral" arch. We didn't try to sing inside the arch but I suspect it would have been awesome.
The arch from the north side. There is probably 500 meters on each side and the north side maybe 75 meters deep. The sand is fine and clean. There were young people swimming in the Pacific Ocean but we did not bring our suits and not certain about the protocol for swimming au natural.
It was encouraging to see these plaques near the drains. It reads "Drains only for rain." It means that at least the locals are conscientious about what goes downstream—ultimately into the ocean. We have similar ones in Fort Collins, but since the ocean is a remote idea to Coloradoans, ours refer to the nearby river.
For the second evening in a row, we went to the Pour House for dinner. Last night I had a Poke Bowl with salmon, noodles, corn, soy beans, beets, papaya, and other tasty ingredients. It was so good that tonight, Jan, Mike, and Bev had the Poke Bowl.
