Bev, Mike and Jan took a walk this Sunday morning down to the northern beach of Lake Taupo. A large, beautiful lake in a caldera that erupted in the second century A.D. It's fall here so swimming is only for the brave.

This Sunday, I got to go fishing! The guide I had was a real scout, sneaking up on fish behind the bushes. The shop was Orvis endorsed so you know that I had a good chance.
Clancy spotted quite a few browns and rainbow. These three browns were just downstream of a bridge and they were huge! We tried to approach them but by the time we got down to the river, they were gone. The one to the left was probably the largest at near 30".
Clancy had me targeting browns with nymphs, a technique I had not practiced much and failed to get a brown to take my flies. Later in the day, I put on a dry/dropper with a bee as the dry and a pheasant tail as the nymph. The fish I was targeting was very patient with me and I probably made a dozen casts over it before it took the nymph. After a healthy time of working the fish, I finally landed the lake run rainbow trout. In some places, they call them steelhead trout.
