The wind and rain had disappeared when we awoke this morning. A good day to be out and about. After a leisurely breakfast, we decided to head to the Blue Penguin Conservation Center. Be careful when driving near the area.
While Little Blue Penguins nested naturally in the area, the Center made such nesting easier by creating artificial burrows of wooden boxes. They also monitor their charges closely to assure that they are in the best of health.
These are the smallest of the penguins and the only one that is mostly nocturnal. While the previous nests were under trees, these are in their own little hill.
The particular stretch of coast at the Center shares space with fur seals. With another woman, we counted over 30 over 200 yards.
A lovely day to wander around town. Bev took a snapshot of this parking lot we used.
We all thought that phone booths were extinct! Yet we found one. We didn't have anyone to call so we didn't test it out.
Wandering around downtown, we saw this coffee roaster shop. You can tell it's near the center of town by the low number of the address.
We went back to the Little Blue Penguin Center to watch the penguins come in from their day of searching for food. They leave their borrows an hour or so before dawn, feed all day and return after the sun goes down. At the center, they come up the rocks on the left, cross the little grassy area, under the fence and into their burrows.
We had to stop and get this portrait of ourselves as Little Blue Penguins.
