We had decided that today was the day to visit the Museum of New Zealand (Te Papa Tongarewa) and that was a good thing because it rained all day. We had a few sprinkles on days past but no real rain. It was a nice gentle rain that didn't seem like much but the weather said there was an accumulation of more than an inch.
Of course the people here are used to moisture. It doesn't stop some people from their appointed rounds.
The exhibits at the museum were really very good. We could have spent several days studying it all. This exhibit was a dramatization of the Pacific Islanders sailing from place to place using the stars of the southern hemisphere, the waves, sea mammals and birds.
Nearby was this small battle canoe with a display above of ocean going steering oars. Those are going to take several people leaning on them to move them side to side.
Someone in our group has liked to collect postcards. Lots of postcards. With a couple boxes, years of postcards could be sent. This collection in the museum was like something from heaven.
An ocean going people would naturally gravitate to including fish in their diet. Hooks are handy for catching fish. With such a variety of hooks, it would be difficult for me to figure out which hook would be best for which kind of fish was available.
There is the fisher and there is the fished.
Then there was the walk back to the hotel in the wind and rain. You could hardly see across the harbor.
Rather than trying once again to conjure up a meal in our rooms, we decided to go out for dinner. We selected Flamingo Joe's on the wharf. The hostess thoughtfully seated us in a far corner, distant from the Friday night partiers. Jan and Mike had Poke Bowl while Bev and I had fish and chips. It was all good.
By the time we were ready to return to our hotel, the rain had let up, the wind died down, and the view across the bay had cleared.
