The weather was cooperative so we went out walking toward Hyde Park. We caught a view of the Sydney Tower. It claims to have the highest observation deck in the Southern Hemisphere while the tower in Auckland claims to be the highest tower.
We stopped in a grocery store along the way and found this empty section with a sign posted on yellow paper. Basically, the sign read "Avian Influenza has impacted the supply of eggs." People are limited in the number of cartons they can buy and the store is doing its best to provide eggs.
On the east side of Hyde Park is the Australian Museum where we spent several hours. Realizing that there was a world-wide bird flu epidemic, we thought we would grab some eggs when we saw them but they started biting back so we left them.
Always the reader, Bev found a stack of books on nature that she added to her list of “must read.”
We went to one of the snack bars and got a little green dinosaur instead of eggs.
It was a Day at the Museum where there was danger everywhere! This giant eel grabbed Paul by the arm and he almost lost it. He got away just fine though.
This Ankylosaur got off the raised dais and Paul helped wrestle it back up. This museum was quite interactive. I would recommend it. We spent nearly four hours there.
We walked another two kilometers north to the edge of the Sydney Harbor to see the Sydney Opera House. Here is Bev and a friend enjoying the view.
To the west is the Sydney Harbor Bridge.
Instead of walking back to the Ibis, we thought we would explore public transportation. We love taking the local trains and it turned out that there was a station where we were and another near where we wanted to go. It was surprisingly simple. The train cars are large and roomy with plenty of seats.
Bev did a bit of research to find the best restaurants at the World Square just across the street from the Ibis. A whole block, two floors of small shops, restaurants, a grocery store, post office, banks, and even a dollar store. At the Yayoi, you ordered using a digital menu and then as parts of your selection are being prepared or delivered, that shows up on the screen.
Bev ordered tempura-like salmon and I had pork katsu. Bev said it was the best salmon she has had in a long time. My katsu was quite good but then...I was spoiled by the selections at Katsu Zen outside the Haijima train station.
All in all, it was a pretty terrific day in Sydney.
